How many years have you been training in the martial arts?
I began training in late August 2014 at nearly 68 years old and am now approaching 7 years with Millennium/Hero (and 75 years old).
Why did you begin martial arts training? Why do you continue to train?
I wanted to learn Tai Chi and improve my left side strength to assist with my equestrian sport. I’ve continued in Tae Kwon Do because I found it helped meet my original goal, but mostly because I found a way of life. I could grow personally and I found a second family. And it keeps me healthy and challenged.
What is a life lesson that martial arts has taught you?
Among the life lessons I’ve gained from martial arts is if we embrace and follow the tenets of TKD, we will have a much happier and successful life. Also, we are able to do much more than we thought we could. I’ve learned that my best effort is enough and I can continue to try to improve my “best”.
What are some of your hobbies, sports, or other activities that you enjoy outside of martial arts?
Since I lost my horse I no longer ride, but still love horses. I am an avid crossword and puzzle nut. I read daily (and probably too long) for pleasure. I enjoy hiking or just walking with my dogs. I’m a huge fan of the Chiefs and Royals.
My son is attending the academy since he was 4 years old, he is now 16 and he continues to be engaged and is very excited to attend his classes. For me, the main reason is that Master Mike is always working to provide value and to challenge him. I truthfully recommend Hero Academy!
My son has learned so much in his years at Hero Martial Arts. So much more than just martial arts - work ethic, respect, responsibility and leadership. Plus a staff that feels like family and goes above and beyond, especially in the last few topsy turvy pandemic years, to come up with creative ways to keep training and keep the kids engaged throughout.
Our son started as a Little Hero almost two years ago and loves coming to class. He has learned so much and we truly appreciate the patience you all have with him. He struggles with focus and Master Neibling nows the right words to help him refocus his energy. I joined the class last October and i am truly enjoying myself. I’m learning, trying and do things I have never done before and it feels great! We love it here!!!
