Why did you begin martial arts training? Why do you continue to train?
I started martial arts training for competition as a teenager and continued through college and during my military service to stay in shape and challenge myself. I continue to train for fitness, the challenge to learn knew things and the desire to never stop growing.
Why did you choose to be a part of the Leadership Team at Hero?
I enjoy the opportunity to give back to the martial arts community and the opportunity to help shape the next generation of martial artists. Instructing classes challenges my depth of knowledge, helps me to better articulate complex techniques and forces me to always be willing to learn.
What is your favorite part about instructing/coaching at Hero?
Student achievements! I love to see students practice, practice, practice and achieve their personal goals. Nothing can describe the sense of pride when a student masters a technique they have struggled so long to learn. Also, belt testing is my favorite event as I get to see our awesome students showcase their talents!
What are some of your hobbies, sports, or other activities that you enjoy outside of martial arts?
I love to run, fish, hike and shoot. Being outdoors is a great release and a reminder of the balance we need in life. It’s easy to let the worries of this world drag us down, but getting outside gives us perspective and the opportunity to enjoy God’s great creation!
Is there anything else that you would like to share with Hero families?
I would encourage parents to join their children, no matter the age, in martial arts. I cannot express the fun we have had as a family in Taekwondo. The motto, “the family that sweats together stays together,” is a fun reminder of how important time together is as family. It is amazing to see the strength of each family member, how they respond to challenge, and the celebration of achieving their goals.
My son is attending the academy since he was 4 years old, he is now 16 and he continues to be engaged and is very excited to attend his classes. For me, the main reason is that Master Mike is always working to provide value and to challenge him. I truthfully recommend Hero Academy!
My son has learned so much in his years at Hero Martial Arts. So much more than just martial arts - work ethic, respect, responsibility and leadership. Plus a staff that feels like family and goes above and beyond, especially in the last few topsy turvy pandemic years, to come up with creative ways to keep training and keep the kids engaged throughout.
Our son started as a Little Hero almost two years ago and loves coming to class. He has learned so much and we truly appreciate the patience you all have with him. He struggles with focus and Master Neibling nows the right words to help him refocus his energy. I joined the class last October and i am truly enjoying myself. I’m learning, trying and do things I have never done before and it feels great! We love it here!!!
