Why did you begin martial arts training? Why do you continue to train?I started my martial arts training because I wanted to get back in shape physically, to find a better work-life balance, and to meet some new people. I quickly found that martial arts helped me to meet all of those goals as well as opened up opportunities that I was not even aware of. I continue to train because there is always something more to learn. As a person who thrives on challenge and goals, this keeps me motivated, even after almost fourteen years of training.
What is your favorite part about instructing/coaching at Hero?I love working with new students, introducing them to ALL of what martial arts has to offer. I enjoy giving students a solid foundation of skills and a philosophy that will be important, not just for martial arts, but for life. I also really enjoy working with black belt instructors who are just starting on the coaching journey. Being able to share what I have learned, helping them develop the knowledge and skills to become effective instructors, and seeing them support the learning of others is so much fun! I take being a role model to others very seriously and love the opportunities that I have to meet so many amazing students and be a part of their martial arts journey.
What are some of your hobbies, sports, or other activities that you enjoy outside of martial arts?I am an avid reader and read books like some people watch movies. I enjoy TV shows like NCIS, Forged in Fire, and the Curse of Oak Island. I enjoy pretty much any activity that I can do outside - camping, canoeing, hiking, mowing the grass, walking in the park.
What is a life lesson that martial arts has taught you?Commitment to Excellence. In martial arts, as in life, the details matter and the amount of effort you put into something matters. When I choose to do my best in everything that I pursue, I find that I am more successful, confident, and focused.
Where is your favorite place to visit on a vacation?I love visiting the island of Cozumel, Mexico and the mountains of Switzerland and Austria. For trips closer to home, I enjoy traveling to Minnesota to spend time with my family and to Branson to be with friends.
